Stretch

Stretch is a second way to play a sample. Instead of a cloud of grains, Field plays the sound back as one smooth time-stretch. Speed and Pitch move independently: slow a phrase right down without it dropping in pitch, or shift its pitch without changing its speed.

Stretch saves with presets, and with your session in a host.

Turn it on

Stretch works in the Free play mode only. Picking Stretch from the PLAY chip switches to Free for you. In Settings, the Stretch switch is dimmed while you are in Instrument mode. If you load a preset saved with Stretch while you are in Instrument mode, Field switches to Free so the preset plays the way it was saved.

While Stretch is on, a STRETCH badge shows in the corner of the waveform.

What it responds to

Control In Stretch
Speed How fast the stretch moves through the sample. Center is stopped; left plays in reverse.
Pitch ribbon Transposes without changing speed.
Size The length of the slices the stretch is built from.
Level Output level, as usual.
Scrub rockers, Freeze and the waveform Move, hold and show the stretch playhead, as they do for grains.
Area Select The stretch loops inside the selected area.
Reverb, Delay and the Tone pad Work as usual.

What it ignores

These controls are dimmed while Stretch is on, and they have no effect:

  • Density, Jitter and Spread
  • Grain Shape
  • Morph, and with it MOVE
  • In the Playheads panel: the extra heads' Speed, Size and Spread, and Stagger

Their settings are kept. Turn Stretch off and they come back as you left them.

Chords with voices

In Stretch the HEADS chip reads VOICES. Pick two or three voices in the panel and give each its own Pitch, Pan and Level. The voices share one playhead, so they always stay together in time. The CHORDS buttons in the panel are the fastest way to set one up. See Playheads.
