CHAOS¶
CHAOS adds variation that suits the active mode. It is one knob on the face, default 20%, and it does something different in each mode:
| Mode | What CHAOS does |
|---|---|
| TREM | The pulse drifts in speed and depth, skips cycles, stalls, sputters, and above 70% breaks a cycle into several held pulses. See TREM. |
| REPEAT | Copies jump up or down an octave, sometimes two, on top of the SHAPE pitch. See REPEAT. |
| LOOPS | Voices move slowly in position, level and pan. Above 50% they also flip to reverse, drop to half speed or jump octaves. See LOOPS. |
At 0% the regular behavior of the mode plays and nothing random happens.
The lamp beside the readout on the face gets brighter as CHAOS goes up.
CHAOS does not change DRIVE, and it does not change WEAR. WEAR responds only to its own knob, its trims and the seed.
Seed¶
The random choices come from a fixed pattern called a seed. The back panel has a SEED number from 00 to 99 and a round arrow button beside it. Each press of the button adds 1, and 99 wraps to 00. There is no button to step down and no random roll.
- The same seed always produces the same random behavior.
- Changing the seed changes it immediately.
- The seed affects TREM's events and drift, REPEAT's octave choices, LOOPS' voice personalities and events, and the personality of WEAR's tape wobble and dropouts.
- Because LOOPS draws each voice's pitch, direction, level and pan from the seed, a new seed changes how LOOPS sounds even at CHAOS 0.
The seed is saved in presets and sessions. Keep a good one by saving the preset.
